Valstagna can be considered the most important centre of the Brenta Valley. Its fame goes back to the seventeenth century when it became, under the Serenissima Republic of Venice, the commercial centre for wood and a military checkpoint. The influence of the Serenissima is still evident in the main square where the Lion of St. Mark holding a closed book (symbol of tax exemption) can still be seen.
Set out against the majestic mountains all around and the characteristic terraced slopes, small land parcels achieved through sharp walls dug out on the mountain slopes give the place an austere beauty.
