The name "Enego" comes from the Germanic Enika. This town was first mentioned in a document of the year 1031 and in 1180 it was ceded as a feud to the Ezzelini family, who kept it until 1260. From 1311 it entered the Federation of the Seven Municipalities (Sette Comuni). The only as yet existing monument dating back to that time is the Torre scaligera, an imposing stone tower. In the cosy town centre, at about 800 m AMSL is the beautiful Duomo di Santa Giustina, of 1792, embellished by the magnificent staircase with 80 steps. It is surrounded by the two main squares, which complete the walk along historic beauties: Piazza del Popolo, the most ancient, and Piazza San Marco, from which the Torre Scaligera can be admired, the only still existing one, out of four towers which Cansignorio della Scala let build in 1335 as a summer mansion and to defend the town.
Beyond architectural beauties, Enego can boast the special fascination of a luxurious vegetation, interesting for its variety and beauty: prealpine flora, poplars, lindens and the ash trees growing on the valley slopes. There are also officinal herbs and hay, juniper and rhododendrons, while up above is the kingdom of edelweiss.
From mid-summer, mycologists will be able to visit and discover the charm of the Marchesina area, looking for the longed for and precious boletus edulis, as well as many other less known but definitely tasty mushrooms which enrich the local gastronomy.
