Cittadella, a walled city, was constructed in 1220 by the Municipality of Padua, and still today guards its treasures within the elliptical walls which are still almost intact. The Town Hall stands in the main square, and was already mentioned in ancient documents in the XV century along with the famous Cathedral dedicated to Saints Prosdocimo and Donato. Along the main roads instead stands the Sociale Theatre, a tiny nineteenth century jewel, and the fifteenth century Praetorian Palace with its frescoed noble–floor and the Casa del Capitano, overlooking the Camminamento di Ronda, the Church of Torresino and the Tower of Malta recalling one of Dante’s quotations. Cittadella today is a flourishing, productive, cultural-touristic and artistic centre which is a reference point for a vast area of the Padua province.
Camminamento di Ronda
From the Casa del Capitano in Porta Bassano you can take the Camminamento di Ronda, now viable all the way up to the Tower of Malta at Porta Padova, whereas the other tracts are under renovation. From a height of 14 m one can enjoy the view of Cittadella and let one’s gaze enjoy the landscape all around.
The Church of Torresino
It was named after the adjacent Tower close to Porta Padova. According to tradition it had been built simultaneously with the castle to house the soldiers at arms and assumed its actual monumental shape during the eighteenth century. Recent excavations brought to light the foundations of a prior building, probably the original one. After having been abandoned for some time, it was renovated and opened to the public as a War Memorial and also a venue for art exhibitions and musical events.
