Leaving the city of Bassano del Grappa behind you, take the Valsugana highway 47 from which you can admire POVE DEL GRAPPA, nestling on the scope of the mountains. Olive trees flourish, growing in the midst of houses and farms. This ancient, almost magical plant, a symbol of determination and faith, found in Pove its climatic cradle in which to grow and prosper.
The most ancient document which mentions the “Villa” of Pove dates back to the year 917. This municipality, like the whole territory of the neighbouring Bassano, belonged to the Marca Trevigiana region. The presence of poplars was a characteristic which once suggested to the first inhabitants the town’s name, taken from the flora, as was common in Italian placenames. “Povedum” or “Povedo” are evident contractions of the Latin “povoledum” poplar or “populus”. Over the years, the name became Pove, and in 1948 took on the current name of Pove del Grappa.
Ancient arts such as the scalpel which made the local masters the cornerstones of an internationally renowned school, are now almost extinct. The fascination and romantic memoirs of today have not cancelled the hard and difficult work of the past, linked to the drama of emigration to distant lands. The five-year Feast of the Divine Crucifix, the main event of the town of Pove, ever since the sixteenth century, has always marked the occasion for many immigrants or their children to return from long-lost places to celebrate a reality which has always been kept alive by their homesickness.
