Paolo Fresu's new project ideally completes the trilogy that began with Tempo di Chet, dedicated to the figure of Chet Baker, and continued with Tango Macondo, a bridge between Sardinia and South America. Kind of Lives is the purely concert-focused version of the magnificent tribute to the great Miles Davis envisioned by Fresu.
On stage are eight major names in contemporary music, divided by Paolo into two ensembles: one acoustic (ideally referencing Baker's jazz and early, historic Davis) and the other electric, leaning toward the "modernist" legacies that link the choices of "electric" Miles Davis with Fresu’s other projects, such as Heroes (his tribute to David Bowie). The musicians on stage have collaborated with Fresu for years, sharing stages and participating in a collective composition woven with vast spaces for improvisation mixed with interpretations of covers drawn from Miles Davis's repertoire. Furthermore, the choice of a double drum kit is particularly striking; in this case as well, it highlights Fresu's "live vision," which looks simultaneously toward a more historically jazz-oriented approach and toward the progressive side of the genre.
