Etna is mighty; it makes you think of a wise giant. At times it is terrible, but even then it seems to shake off its chains with the mysterious inevitability of a nocturnal fate; Mount Fuji is agile, like a sword, inviting you to be bold… Mount Fuji is also close to love and death, to all great follies; Etna, on the other hand, is time populated by endless shadows.” The “brothers” of the title of Roberto Zappalà’s latest creation are none other than Mount Fuji and Mount Etna, the two volcanoes par excellence of history and the symbolic imagination. The work focuses strongly and vigorously on the relationship between the dancers’ performance and that of the Munedaiko, musicians dedicated to the practice and promotion of the traditional Japanese “Taiko” drum, where posture, movement, and concentration are fundamental. Just as volcanoes are at the origin of the planet’s formation, percussion is at the origin of the musical and cultural art created by humankind, beginning with the rhythm of the heartbeat. The drums create bursts of sound and rhythm that “explode” in the ears and minds of the audience; rhythms that the dancers both follow and create in an unceasing flow a shared breath that harmonizes the bodies, with their cultures of origin and with one another with the hope, increasingly desirable today, that, as Fosco Maraini says, we may be “imbued with that Confucian oil necessary to lubricate the wheels of civil coexistence. ”Silence and chaos, movement and stillness, East and West, nature and culture: dualities that permeate this creation and echo a saying cherished in the East: “Two is one, and one is two.” **Roberto Zappalà** is the artistic director and choreographer of the Compagnia Zappalà Danza, which he founded in 1990 in Catania. He has created over 85 works, primarily full-length productions, exclusively for his own company, as well as numerous collaborations with other companies, including Balletto di Toscana, the Ballet School of La Scala in Milan, Norrdans (Sweden), ArtEZ Arnhem (Netherlands), the Theaterwerkplaats Generale Oost Foundation (Netherlands), and the Gothenburg Ballet/Gothenburg Opera (Sweden). Roberto Zappalà is responsible for the restoration and conceptualization of Scenario Pubblico in Catania, which opened in 2002 and was designated a Center of Significant National Interest by the Ministry of Culture in 2022. After years of exploring movement alongside his dancers, his choreographic style has evolved into the MoDem language that is, Movimento Democratico which has its own well-defined and unique identity. Every year, Roberto Zappalà selects a group of dancers from the MoDem Pro program who join CZD2, which has become a true training ground for the official company.
