A man against the current, who, though rich, chose not only to be poor but to become a servant to the poor. A knight who no longer wished to wage war and who, as a friar during the Crusades, traveled to the Holy Land preaching peace and brotherhood. But why does Francis still fascinate us after eight centuries? And where would we find him today?

Pondering these questions, Celestini tells the story of today's Francis, finding his characters among those whom, now as then, no one sees. Francis is also credited with the invention of the Nativity scene, which the Saint first set up in Greccio on Christmas of 1223 with an ox, a donkey, and a manger. It served to show that Jesus was born poor, in a poor country. Celestini dedicates his narrative to Francis, the Saint who chose to serve the poor and who created the Nativity scene.
