Aerowaves 2021 Selection

Waddah Sinada and Rhys Dennis open a dialogue surrounding the myth of masculinity as it is felt within the Pan-African diaspora. They are deconstructing the power struggle within themselves and finding the balance between conflict, vulnerability, and codependency; they own and repair their deeper anxieties. This work is a testimony of the generational trauma inherited by men from marginalised groups with the mission of creating a space where the black male figure is more visible and honestly represented in its full complexity.

Archipelago was created during the choreographic exchange between dance artists Fabio Novembrini, James Viveiros and the dramaturg Ginelle Chagnon, in the “Duo à trois voix” project. The work looks at communication in an unusual way, by means of manipulating natural objects: small rocks, and the poetry hidden in them. This led to a practice acknowledging the importance of dialogue and the diversity of societal, environmental and historical realities; and, of course, of the fragility of the human condition.

Choreographer Sara Sguotti continues her collaboration with the Dance Well dancers, part of the community of Dance Well, contemporary dance practice for people living with Parkinson’s. Hop is a journey though the body: a lone body, where the common feeling feeds the strength found in being alone and isolated. In the vicinity, the energy and positivity generated by the movement swells up like a wave. Hop is a living energy that overcomes the barriers of what is possible, where new heroes are born.

A body that traces its own journey through equal and opposite impulses: on the one hand, a moving sculpture that expands the duration of the natural gesture, creating infinite geometries on which, however, it doesn't dwell. On the other hand, an enigmatic organism that twists, cracks at the mercy of its possibilities of metamorphosis. The process of research is a meditative path, made of continuous concentration and attention to detail, to try to shape the anxieties and contradictions that live there.
